An air source heat pump looks and works similarly to an air conditioning unit, except it heats up the water which will heat the radiators, and is powered by solar.
This can be an expensive system to run if your house is poorly insulated - your property will receive extra insulation (if needed), and the cost of running the system will be supplemented by solar panels.
You will be provided with more solar panels than will be required to power the heating system installed. This means, technically, you will only be paying for heating when there is no daylight*
*while solar does provide most power during sunlight, you don't actually need direct sunlight for the photovoltaic panels to work, as they can produce electricity on cloudy days and moonlit nights!Under the ECO4 scheme, batteries are not included. However, should you wish to ask the installer to provide a battery at your own personal cost, this can be arranged.
All solar panels are connected to an inverter, which is then connected to your electricity meter. During the daytime, the panels are generating electricity to power your house, and any excess will be sold back to the grid. This will be monitored through your smart meter, and will be taken off your electricity bill from your electricity provider. A full breakdown will be shown on your billTo receive the solar panels, you need an electric heating system. The type of heating system depends on a number of factors, which we'll discuss with you individually, however this may well be an air source heat pump, or alternatively modern high heat retention electric storage heaters, if you do not already have a radiator heating system and there is insufficient space to site your air source heat pump.
During the summer months, your bill will be dramatically reduced. However, it is worth noting that during winter, your electricity bill will increase, as you now have an electric based heating system, but you will no longer have an oil or gas heating bill to pay for, meaning the typical annual heating savings for a property can be anywhere from £500 to £1500 per year.
It is important to note that you will not be eligible for the grant if a solar powered electric heating system won't save you moneyUnder the scheme, we won't provide you with a solar powered electric heating system unless it can be proven that you will save money.
The photovoltaic solar panels installed don't actually need full bright sunlight to work, so even in the UK this system can start saving you money on your heating bill right awayThere are a number of routes to qualify for these grants, and we will help you find the best route for your individual circumstances. While the grants initially targeted individuals in fuel poverty (i.e. individuals on means tested benefits or household incomes under £31K), these grants have now been expanded, and they cover health conditions affected by living in a cold home.
These include, but are not limited to - cardiovascular, respiratory, immunosuppressive, and mobility issues - and this route is not capped by earnings.Step one in assessing eligibility is ensuring the property qualifies. In devon the property must be E F or G
rated on an EPC (or if there is no EPC for your property then we will be able to do an assessment upon visitation).
Once this is established, the resident must also qualify via one of the following routes -
Route 1 - Annual household income under £31K
Route 2 - Any resident in the property receiving Means-Tested benefits:
1) Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
2) Income related Employment and Support Allowance
3) Income Support
4) Working Tax Credit
5) Child Tax Credit
6) Universal Credit
7) Pension Credit Savings Credit
8) Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
9) Housing Benefit
10) Child Benefit (subject to income caps and composition)
Route 3 - Any household member has a health condition affected by living in a cold home (eg. asthma, high blood pressure, arthritis, bowel or organ problems, or receiving cancer treatments)
